Funders and Sponsors

Funders and Sponsors of National Writing Day.

Writing is best when shared with others and we could not share National Writing Day without the generous support of our key funders: Old Possums’ Practical Trust (T.S Eliot’s Literary Estate) and the Arts Council England.

With their endorsement, we’re proud to start a national conversation about the power and pleasure of creative writing, and encourage more communities to get writing on National Writing Day.

Old Possums Practical Trust is proud to fund the National Writing Day, an initiative that proposes to take First Story’s important and life-changing message of self-expression beyond the classroom.

Old Possum’s Practical Trust is a registered charity giving grants to support literary, artistic, musical and theatrical projects and organisations.

The Trust was established by Valerie Eliot with her personal funds in 1990 and following the enormous success of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical ‘Cats’. The musical drew for its inspiration upon Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ - a collection of poems written for children and first published in 1939.

Other projects we’re proud to support include Citizens UK, Edlumino (both refugee charities), new writing programmes at the National and the Old Vic, The Shakespeare Schools Festival, and Friends of the National Library, as well as being an early, long-term funder of First Story’s intensive residencies in secondary schools since its founding in 2008.
