As part of National Writing Day, we will publish freely downloadable extracts from the creative writing portfolios of this year’s Rathbones Folio Mentees. The mentees – Adnaan, Aisha and Henna – were mentored by Louise Doughty, Francesca Beard, and Joe Dunthorne respectively, over the course of a school year, and have been producing poetry, spoken word, and short fiction.
Additionally, on National Writing Day, we will throughout the day release podcasts of this year’s Rathbones Folio Sessions – a one-day literary festival, held at the British Library, which took on the theme of book-writing. Chaired by A.L. Kennedy, and featuring Chloe Aridjis, Diana Evans, Anna Burns, Kate Clanchy, Raymond Antrobus, and many more, these ‘How To Write A Book In A Day’ podcasts give a precious glimpse into the creative process of some of the most exciting writers at work today. The final podcast in the series presents the Rathbones Folio Mentorships Showcase, where this year’s mentees read from their creative writing portfolios.
The podcasts and creative writing portfolios of this year’s Rathbones Folio Mentees will be available to download from the Rathbones website on National Writing Day here: https://www.rathbonesfolioprize.com.
Notes: The Rathbones Folio Mentorships were founded in 2017 and are run in association with First Story. They pair up to 4 outstanding graduates of First Story’s in-school creative writing programs – which take part in lower-income areas – with 4 members of the Folio Academy (an international group of over 270 writers and critics) for a school year’s worth of one-to-one mentoring, culminating in a public reading event at the British Library.
